De Formula BMW Europe begint aan haar tweede jaar. 2009 laat weer een ijzersterk deelnemersveld zien met voornamelijk talenten die hun opleiding genoten in karting. Doordat de Formula BMW Europe een groot gedeelte van haar races afwerkt in het voorprogramma van de F1 Grands Prix betekent dit een mooi platvorm voor de rijders om zich in de kijker te rijden bij de grote Formule1 teams. Nico Rosberg, Adrian Sutil, Sebastian Vettel, Sebastién Buemi en Timo Glock begonnen hun single-seater loopbaan vanuit de karts in de Formule BMW.
Er rijden in 2009 twee Nederlandse rookies in het competitieve veld: Robin Frijns en Jack te Braak. Beide coureurs zitten bij goede teams in de vorm van Kaufmann en Mucke. Toch maken voorlopig de tweede jaars coureurs de dienst uit, getuige de test in Barcelona, waar Michael Christensen (voormalig karter bij PdB Racing) de tabellen aanvoerde. De rijders hebben nog een aantal officiële testdagen voor de boeg alvorens de serie aftrapt op 8/10 mei in Spanje.
